Unplugged Weddings - Our Favourite Ways to Ask For An Unplugged Day
Unplugged weddings are becoming increasingly popular, and we are fully in support of this trend. An ‘unplugged’ wedding is essentially a wedding where all guests are politely asked to keep their phones away and remain present throughout the day.
As photographers, having a crowd full of phones staring at the happy couple isn’t exactly ideal - and it actually makes our job a fair bit trickier. Getting beautiful shots of your ceremony, whilst navigating and avoiding all the phones isn’t easy. Plus - your wedding photos will be filled with the smiling faces of all your friends and family as we capture all their emotions and reactions during the day.
We also believe asking your guests to keep their devices away makes for a much nicer experience for everyone involved. Everyone seems just that little bit more relaxed and present when they don’t have the temptation of checking their emails. Switching off and enjoying company is the loveliest way to spend the day.
Luckily for you, we’ve come up with a few ways of politely asking your guests to put their phones away and stay present throughout the day.
Say it with a sign.
Place a beautifully designed sign at the entrance of your ceremony, so your guests know it’s time to unplug. Here are a few of our favourites.

Give the job to your celebrant.
Right before the ceremony begins, your celebrant can let everyone know that it’s time to unplug. Here are our favourite ways they can word it:
‘Before the beautiful bride arrives I have just a few things I need to let you know. Firstly, the couple has kindly requested an unplugged day today. They ask that, in order for you to be fully present with them, please turn off all mobile phones and cameras. Their photographer is amazing and will capture some wonderful photos today’
‘The most wonderful gift you can give the lovely couple today is your presence. Please switch off all devices, and enjoy the day with us’
‘The lovely couple have requested your smiling faces today. Please put all cameras away.’
And, for the light-hearted ceremonies:
“Today, on this very special day, the couple has asked for everyone's presence. Please put your phones and cameras away and enjoy the day with us. That means you, Aunt Jill — Your instagram will survive without you.”
